Technical Guide to Light Filters and Professional Gels

A lighting filter, commonly known as a "lighting gel," is a very thin Polyester film (PET - Polyethylene Terephthalate), coated on both sides with high-quality dye. The dye is formulated to make the filter as durable as possible in terms of light and heat resistance, while also providing flame-retardant properties.
On average, a Polyester light filter can withstand a maximum temperature of 180°C (356°F), although this may vary depending on the color, while HT Polycarbonate filters can withstand up to 230°C (446°F). The further the filter is from the lamp, the less heat it receives, thus extending its lifespan.
Light filters are divided into different types and marked with standard numbering.
Each filter has a light transmission percentage indicated for each code; the higher the percentage, the more light passes through. Thickness is measured in mils (thousandths of an inch) and converted to microns (μ). A standard filter generally has a thickness of 76.2 microns.

Filters for enhancing, correcting, and softening LED light
LED lighting often produces a sterile or flat sensation, making objects or people appear lifeless.
This is because white LEDs often contain an excess of green and lack important parts of the spectrum that make light appealing on skin tones and architectural surfaces. For example, when emphasizing the color of meat in a butcher shop, it is useful to correct the green spike with LED Minus Green filters rather than simply increasing pink tones.
Additionally, LED Diffusion filters can be used to correct the beam produced by LEDs which, being a point-like concentrated light source, often generates an unattractive beam pattern.

Architectural installations
The LED light filter line can be used to enhance customers' skin tones in a store, balance LED light with other sources, or reduce reflections and hot spots in a shop window.

Image acquisition
Thanks to the low heat emission of LED lights, the gel is no longer a consumable item: it becomes an accessory, much like a scrim or a barn door. These are semi-rigid filters that offer directors, gaffers, cinematographers, and photographers a reusable and durable solution to correct color rendering issues. CTOs, Minus Greens, and Neutral Densities are excellent tools for balancing LED lights, particularly green spikes that traditional Minus Greens do not resolve correctly. Diffusers and colored filters are perfect for softening the "harsh" output of LED sources and improving actors' skin tones.

Specifications
The range includes 21 filters produced from 180-micron material—more than double the thickness of a standard lighting filter—with a lifespan up to 200 times longer, and an optimal working temperature range of -37.2°C to 115.6°C.
This type of filter is intended for use as an external accessory for LED fixtures. A sufficient distance must be maintained from the LED emitter surface to prevent color migration due to intense photonic energy. The minimum distance is 3/4 of an inch (18 mm), but this may vary based on the wavelength and output power of the specific LED.

If you wish to intervene exclusively on light intensity, you can use classic Neutral Density Filters or specific LED Neutral Density filters, which reduce intensity without any color shift.
Classic Conversion Filters or specific LED Warm filters convert daylight to tungsten light, shifting the color temperature toward yellow-orange (warming).
Various conversion levels exist, ranging from the LED 809 filter (300K conversion) to the 287 (4,353K conversion).
In architectural fields, a satisfying and natural result can be achieved immediately using a light conversion.

Of particular note is the LED filter with a 180-micron thickness—more than double a standard filter—providing greater durability and solving fading issues associated with LED lighting.

On average, a Polyester filter withstands 180°C, while HT Polycarbonate withstands up to 230°C. The further from the lamp, the longer the lifespan.
To address non-uniform fading issues with LED lighting, a special filter was designed that ensures a longer lifespan than traditional filters.
In-depth tests* show that LED filters offer over 85% efficiency up to 20 months after installation. Virtually no fading after 30 hours and maintaining at least 85% efficacy after 20 months due to special dyes.
LED filters are also more robust with a 180-micron thickness, making them easier to handle and more durable.

They are more or less transparent; each filter has a light transmission percentage (Y%) indicated for each code; the higher it is, the more light passes through.
C-Tube light filters, supplied in tubular rolls suitable for T5, T8, and T12 fluorescent tubes, create a very pleasant light at a low cost.
These filters are specifically designed for use with fluorescent tubes and utilize UV-resistant dyes to keep colors brilliant over a long period compared to other filters.

LED filters target one or both of these areas to improve light quality for a more pleasing appearance.

A classic LED issue: it illuminates meat with excessive blue and yellow-green tones.
The truth is that you should not use red or pink filters to color the meat; the result will not be natural and will worsen the situation.
When you want to emphasize the color of meat or skin, you must correct the blue spike and yellow-green concentration found in LEDs using LED Minus Green filters. These appear pinkish to the eye but are technical correction filters, not simple colored gels.
